  • Jharkhand is a state in eastern India. It's known for its waterfalls, the elegant Jain temples of Parasnath Hill and the elephants and tigers of Betla National Park. The state capital of Ranchi is a gateway to the park.
  • It features the 17th-century Jagannath Temple, a Hindu shrine and the Jharkhand War Memorial.
  • Ranchi, earlier named Lohardaga, came into existence after the creation of the non-regulation South - West frontier as a result of the Kol rising in 1831-32. The name of the district was changed in 1899 from Lohardaga to Ranchi.
  • Possibly, the area was included in the Magadh Empire during the reign of Ashoka (273-232 B.C.). With the decline of the Mauryan Empire, King Kharavels of Kalinga led on army through Jharkhand and ransacked Rajgriha and Patliputra.
  • During the reign of Muhammad Shah (1719 - 1748). Sar Balland Khan, the Governor of Bihar, marched against the Raja of Chotanagpur and forced his submission.
  • Another expedition was led by Fakhruddoula, Governor of Bihar in 1731. The district seems to have remained uneventful from 1624 when Durjan Sal was released till the appearance of the British in 1772.
  • The district played an important role in the national freedom movement. Under the guidance of Ganesh Chandra Ghosh, Ranchi became an important center of work for the followers of the Revolutionary party.
  • Ranchi was the venue of a meeting between Mahatma Gandhi and Sir Edward Albert Gait, Lieutenant Governor of Bihar and Orissa on 4th June and again on 22nd September, 1917 in the context of the Champaran Indigo planters’ repressive measures against the raiyats of that district.
  • On 5th October, 1926, a khadi exhibition was opened at Ranchi in the presence of Sri Rajendra Prasad in the local Arya Samaj Hall.
  • The Salt Satyagraha which was launched at the behest of Mahatma Gandhi, received great response in Ranchi district. People took an active part in the subsequent events which led to the country's independence in 1947.
  • The 28th state of the Indian Union was brought into existence by the Bihar reorganization Act on November 15,2000- the birth anniversary of the legendary Bhagwan Birsa Munda.
  • Jharkhand is famous for its rich mineral resources like Uranium, Mica, Bauxite, Granite, Gold, Silver, Graphite, Magnetite, Dolomite, Fireclay, Quartz, Fieldspar, Coal (32% of India), Iron, Copper (25%of India) etc. Forests and woodlands occupy more than 29% of the state which is amongst the highest in India.

Ranchi is well connected by a network of roads. Bus services are available for many cities and towns. One can travel in deluxe bus services or book cabs from Ranchi Car Rental services and access taxi services online. National Highway 33 and 23 pass through Ranchi. Jharkhand State Road Transport Corporation operates several buses as well. There are private bus operators which offer luxury buses.

Train Originates from Ranchi (RNC) Ranchi Railway Station is the main railway station of Ranchi and is connected to most of the cities like Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bangalore, etc. Its railway hub has four major stations namely Ranchi Junction, Hatia Station, Tatisilwai Station and Namkom Station. There are daily trains like the Shatabdi Express, Hatia Howrah Express, Hatia Patna Express, etc. then bi-weekly trains like Ranchi New Delhi Rajdhani Express, Ranchi Kamakhya Express, etc.

Important Places to Visit

Hazaribagh

The name implies 'a thousand gardens'. Since long it is a renowned health resort for its excellent climate and magnificent sceneries all around. Parasnath Temple is situated on a hillock close by, where 23 out of 24 Jain prophets are believed to have attained salvation.

Jagannathpur Temple

10 km apart from Ranchi town Jagannathpur temple was built in 1691 having resemblance with architectural style of Puri temple. Rath yatra similar to Puri is held every year.

Netarhat

156kms from Ranchi, this beautiful hill station promises a perfect solitude and offers stunning views of sunrise and sunset.

Jonha Falls

Also known as Gautamdhara is around 40 Kms from Ranchi. It is approachable by both Road and train. The fall can be admired by descending around 500 steps. There is a tourist rest house which contains Lord Buddha temple. The river Kanchi flows nearby.

Hirni Falls

Another beautiful waterfall amidst forests about 70 km from Ranchi.

Ranchi Hill and Pahari Mandir

Is one of the landmark of Ranchi Town. The Shiva temple is situated on the top of the hill also known as Pahari Mandir. At the bottom of the hill is Ranchi Lake.Ranchi lake was excavated by Colonel Onsely in 1842.

Sun Temple

Is built by Sanskriti Vihar headed by Sitaram Maroo. It is situated at a distance of 40 kms on Ranchi Tata Road. It is built in the form of a Chariot with 18 wheels drawn by 7 white horses. It is surrounded by a pond which is used by devotees during Chhath Puja for worshipping of Sun.

Raj Mahal

Rajmahal is a historical town on the right bank of the Ganges River in Sahibganj District, Jharkhand. Rajmahal Railway Station is on the Bhagalpur-Rampurhat loop line of the Eastern Railways. By road, Rajmahal is connected with Godda, Bhagalpur, Maldah and Murshidabad.
